Heart attacks in Sri Lankans

There is an alarming rise in heart attacks in Sri Lankans. Patients tend be younger than previously. Among many factors contributing to this, food habits and distancing one self from the nature seem to be important.

I read this news article which should be very informative for our readers.

"Heart Attacks" - Coronory Heart Diseases

What is coronary heart disease?

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is sometimes called coronary artery disease. A coronary artery is a blood vessel that carries blood to heart muscle. These arteries are like narrow tubes. A fatty substance called plaque can build up in arteries, blocking or slowing the flow of blood and oxygen through them. This can happen in any artery, but when it happens in the coronary arteries, the heart muscle doesn't get the blood and oxygen it needs to work properly. Coronary heart disease can lead to serious health problems, including angina (pain or pressure in the chest) and heart attack.

Angiography

What is Angiography and who needs it?

Angiography is done to view the vessels supplying the heart and see whether there is any narrowing. This is mainly done to see whether you need a bypass surgery if there is a big obstruction in the vessels. It is done by injecting a dye to the vessels and viewing it through a screen.
People who get recurrent chest pains not responding to medication are the ones who mainly need it. A doctor has to decide whether you need it or not.

Exercise May Generate New Blood Vessels

New research presented at the European Society of Cardiology meeting finds that exercise may provide a spark for the creation of new heart vessels.

A small study found that that patients with serious heart failure who rode a bike for 30 minutes daily over a period of 4 months produced new stem cells in their bones, and more small blood vessels in their muscles, compared to those who did not exercise.
